Spontaneous weekend in Porto

All this trip came up quite spontaneously, as I got my dates for my Easter holiday and wasn’t sure where to go. First plan was to come home to Czech Republic and visit my family, but my travel spirit felt a different way.

Just randomly searching for some flights to anywhere, suddenly a flight to Porto popped up, very cheap and just 2 hrs from London. It went straight to my cart and I had my flight! Thinking and searching for flights to Prague which didn’t seem right and with 1 change in Paris.

Coming to conclusion I just decided to stay in Portugal, which I always wanted to see and bought my flights from Porto to Madeira made me so happy and over excited even more than the whole trip. 😀

Thanks to my friend, which has decided on a spot to go and join me there and then later Kuba to join me in Madeira, I could shared and enjoy this beautiful holiday with a company!

OUR 4 DAYS IN PORTO

My travelling started quite early, quickly took some noodles at BananaTree in Oxford, which was delicious btw and then just let the bus take me to the airport.

The flight was all ok and I was enjoying the whole row just for myself, till a man who represented himself as a pastor, who loves talking to other people about God,
occupied my space and interrupted my privacy. As fast it all started with politeness, it ended with no interest from my side – after telling him I go to church already.

After few hours of delays we luckily landed and I finally met my friend Kuba! After taxi and few wrongly navigated walks towards my hotel, I could finally relax and left my luggage and go to enjoy the night sparkling Porto and endless stairs.

The city after rain with wet streets reflecting lamps and all the night lights – was just breathtaking and so calming.

Just the perfect start for my Portugal holiday in Porto!

After not very long sleep I got up at 10am and met outside with Kuba and together went to meet the city and its beautiful streets. Wandering around all the abandoned houses and flats. Coming to a new and immediately our favourite bistro NOLA KITCHEN!
Sitting down for a brunch and enjoying the morning sunshine, we waited for my friend Kira, who was coming from Hungary to join us!

After her accommodation we left to see the Douro River bands, enjoyed a little quick lunch in Bacalhau Restaurant and happily joined a river cruise with some ciders.

Tired of the strong sun and wind, we slowly walked towards our hotels, visiting quickly a fireman station with a photography exhibition, few souvenir shops on the way and happily knocked ourselves to the beds. Kira fell asleep right away and I went to buy some Spanish empanadas from the shop on our street.

Tiring yet full of excitement and delicious food, we enjoyed our 2nd day in Portugal!

For me Sunday started early in a beautiful chapel of St Catarina and then meeting Kira in our favourite Nola kitchen for some smoothies, banana bread and chai latté. Full of deliciousness we walked through the sunny city of Porto.

Shopping some little presents, visiting an amazing artist Hugo and his gallery hidden in one of the streets. Sharing our thoughts, buying his amazing watercolour artwork and continuing to the blue tiled train station.

Waiting for a traditional yellow tram and having a ride through the city to the seaside, walking by the sea, sunbathing on the beach and catching the bus to the exhibition of Freeda Kahlo. Which was just so interesting and very nicely and interactively made!

Wandering back home for a little siesta after 1 000s of steps, changing to pretty clothes and going to enjoy a glass of wine and the most delicious steak in Cúmplice Steak House.

Our last day was very chilling and relaxed. We had a good night sleep and waking up to the rain in the morning, didn’t get us up almost till the lunchtime. But we got up and found Starbucks just 2 mins away, where we sat down and order some toasties and I tried the traditional Portuguese pastry – delicious!
And then we just walked around, chased some souvenirs and shops and packed our stuff to get ready for our another adventure! We almost didn’t catch the tube to the airport, but the luck was on our side and the whole transfer went smooth and safe.

And Madeira was waiting for us!

My Favourites Restaurants in Porto

Once it comes to food and what we’re gonna eat, I am more than happy to spend hours of searching for the best restaurants,

hidden local bistros or just a fast food on a street. However in Portugal everything came to us so suddenly and we were very lucky to find the best of Porto!

“NOLA — stands for No Labels — is a new kitchen concept where real food comes first and people are united by a common belief: that real, healthy and tasty food makes us both healthier and happier.
Being NOLA is a refusal of the food that hurts our health and that’s why refined sugars and flours, as well as processed ingredients or preservatives are not allowed in our kitchen. We believe in the power of real food: more vegetables and ethically sourced, better quality meat and fish. We do not believe in one right diet, but in one right way of eating, what we call: THE NOLA WAY OF LIFE.”

NOLA KITCHEN

Portuguese wine and food just beside the Douro River with its beautiful view should be on your list with visiting and discovering Porto!

It’s quite busy at the lunch time but definitely worth to find and try all its delicious food and enjoy the Portuguese wine!

For meat and steak lovers this restaurant is a must, as it’s the best steak I ever had. And beside the delicious food just melting in your mouth, the whole atmosphere, music and the most nicest stuff is just an unforgettable experience.

Just make sure to give it a call and book your table before you go!

Opening hours from Monday to Sunday 19 to 24h.
